Residents in 21228 could be host to a new boutique Catonsville grocery store by the end of the year. That’s the news from property owners Patrick Baldwin and Dan Zakai. The duo is working to open a grocery store next to their Frederick Road Veterinary Hospital.
The name – 818 Market – is a nod to the street address. The store will occupy all of the properties, 9,000 square feet. Plans to highlight the historic 1935 building show a facade clean-up but no structural changes. Baldwin states, “We love the building. It’s an old, historic building and it’s beautiful.”
The store will be modeled after Santoni’s in Glyndon, Eddies’ in Roland Park and Graul’s in Towson. Each of these boutique grocery stores stand out amongst a sea of mega-supermarkets.
Excitement for A Catonsville Grocery Store
Baldwin continues, “There’s a market niche here. If you fill it, people will come and support local brands, as opposed to big national chains.” The market will require a staff of several dozen people to operate. The owners plan to put together a team over the next six months.
Here at Wissel Homes, we’re as excited as everyone else about the prospect of a new grocery store in Catonsville proper. The last Catonsville grocery store closed over two decades ago with no replacement.
Our local friends and neighbors have echoed our sentiments with the majority seeming to express an “It’s about time!” We couldn’t agree more. It will be a welcome addition to the community, and we wish them the best.
The professionals at Wissel Homes know the Central Maryland market because it’s our home too.
